Know before you go to Port Alexander

Getting there

  • Access is by floatplane or boat only, about 65 miles south of Sitka. Baranautica Air Service, a Port Alexander-based operator, flies the scheduled Essential Air Service route to and from Sitka on Mondays and Fridays ($150 one way, 3-passenger Cessna 185 floatplane), per the carrier's own site. (baranautica.com · checked Oct 16, 2026)
  • The state DCRA database adds that the M/V Eyak mailboat provides year-round mail service plus fuel and freight except in summer, that a state-owned seaplane base and a dock with small boat harbor serve the town, and that there are no roads — Port Alexander is not connected to any other community on. (maps.commerce.alaska.gov · checked Oct 16, 2026)
  • The protected, ice-free inner harbor behind its breakwater once anchored a thousand trolling boats a summer and is still where town life ties up. DCRA: dock and small boat harbor; outer-harbor replacement sought as of 2014 (text as of Aug 2023). (maps.commerce.alaska.gov · checked Oct 16, 2026)
  • The state-owned seaplane base is where the scheduled floatplane from Sitka touches down, the community's only scheduled link to the outside. DCRA transportation overview: a state-owned seaplane base is present; DCRA EAS table lists PTD as the EAS-designated seaplane base served from Sitka (SIT). Local government

  • A second-class city of about 65 runs its affairs from Bear Hall, with the council meeting the first Monday of each month and a 4% local sales tax. DCRA municipal contacts: phone/fax (907) 568-2211, email cityofportalexander@yahoo.com, no website. (maps.commerce.alaska.gov · checked Oct 16, 2026)

Good to know

  • 65 people (2025 DCCED-certified population, Alaska DCRA Community Database); a 2nd class city, recorded in the Prince of Wales-Hyder Census Area. (maps.commerce.alaska.gov · checked Oct 16, 2026)
  • Per the Southeast Conference community profile (built on 2010-era data): no health-care facilities (emergency care is volunteer EMS), power from individual household diesel generators, piped water from Dirty Dick Dam, and septic/outhouse sewage; the city, school and post office provide the only. (seconference.org · checked Oct 16, 2026)
  • No store, restaurant, lodge or fuel dock could be verified as currently operating from any allowed source; the state DCRA database notes most families transport their own essential supplies from outside the community, and there is no state ferry stop. (maps.commerce.alaska.gov · checked Oct 16, 2026)
  • The tiny K-12 school, part of the Southeast Island School District, hosts the Tides to Tongass Science and Arts Academy that brings outside students to study marine ecology alongside local kids. (sisd.org · checked Oct 16, 2026)
