Angoon in brief

  1. Angoon, a city on Admiralty Island, takes its name from the Tlingit Aangóon, 'isthmus town'. The island has long been Tlingit homeland. (sealaskaheritage.org · checked Oct 6, 2026)
  2. On Oct. 26, 1882, a U.S. force under the commander of USS Adams destroyed about 40 Tlingit canoes, then shelled and burned Angoon. It followed a compensation dispute after a whaling bomb accidentally killed a Tlingit shaman on Oct. 22. In 1982 the Navy wrote that it should never have happened.
